There have been instances where Philippine Coast Guard and civilian fishing and supply vessels were intimidated by Chinese Coast Guard, Chinese maritime militia, and allegedly civilian Chinese fishing boats. The following is a list of some of the harassing behaviors:
According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, on January 27, 2014, a Chinese coast guard ship used a water cannon to eject Filipino fishermen from Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, demonstrating the aggressive enforcement of new Chinese fishing regulations.
On November 16, 2021, three Chinese coast guard vessels blocked and fired water cannons against two supply boats as they traveled to Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, forcing a Philippine resupply mission in the West Philippine Sea to abort.
On August 5, 2023, a boat leased by the military to transport supplies to Marines stationed on BRP Sierra Madre who got aground on Second Thomas Shoal or Ayungin Shoal was targeted by a Chinese coast guard vessel using a powerful water cannon.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel was allegedly hit by a Chinese coast guard ship on February 6, 2023, with a military-grade laser, briefly rendering some of its crew blind. The Philippine government described this as a “blatant” infringement of Manila’s sovereign rights.
In order to prevent the Philippine patrol ship BRP Malapascua from getting too close to Ayungin (Second Thomas Shoal), a submerged coral that has been held by Philippine forces, the Chinese ship likewise maneuvered dangerously close, at roughly 137 meters (449 feet), the PCG claimed in a statement.
An ex-official of the United States Air Force claims that on June 30, two Philippine ships engaged and were “pursued” by China Coast Guard vessels and militia.
The Philippine Navy ship BRP Sierra Madre was being resupplied by a small boat when the PCG boats BRP Malabrigo and BRP Malapascua reportedly came into “an armada” of CCG militia.
